Turners (Soham) Ltd

You’d have to look long and hard to find somebody who hasn’t heard of Turners (Soham) Ltd

An East Anglian powerhouse of a company

You’d have to look long and hard to find somebody who hasn’t heard of Turners (Soham) Ltd.  The distinctive red, orange and white liveried vehicles are a regular sight all across the region and beyond.  What you might be surprised at, however, is the vast size and many successes of the company.  In the words of two year 10 students who visited Turners for work experience “we thought it was just a delivery Company- now we know Turners is so much more”.   Here, we’d like to introduce you to this East Anglian powerhouse of a company.

Back in the 1930s, brothers Wallace and Frank Turner bought their first vehicle and began delivering loads from their father's farm in Soham, Cambridgeshire.  In those days, they transported everything from live cattle to picked produce for the London markets.  No doubt they’d be very pleased with the journey that Turners has taken since then.  Specialist areas of operation now include temperature controlled storage and distribution and bulk tankers which carry a range of products.

Turners is not a company to brag about its achievements – but they are many.  Here are some fast facts you might not know about one of the largest haulage companies in the UK:

  • Head office is based from a 40 acre site near Newmarket
  • Over 1000 vehicles and 1400 trailers operate from 32 locations
  • Over 2000 colleagues employed throughout the UK

Turners have been steadily growing the business, and purchases of Macintyre Transport and Goldstar Transport in 2016 have resulted in significant increases in turnover and profit. Pre-tax profit rose to £28.26m (from £24.8m in the previous year) for the period ending 31 December 2016, with turnover up 27% to £313.8m (£247m).

To complement the main business of storage and distribution, three driver training centres in the UK train both Turners own staff and others, and a network of purpose built workshops are used to service and repair their own vehicles.  With a fleet of over 1000 vehicles and 1400 trailers this is a vital component of the business.

Charity bake-offs and a bonus ball game have recently raised thousands for charity and the company has received numerous awards including Tanker Operator of the Year 2017 and Road Freight Operator of the Year 2016.

As part of our program to promote the area as a base for successful business, we paid a visit to Turners.  Watch our video of the tour, coming soon…
