East Cambridgeshire has a diverse and plentiful range of flourishing industry sectors. Business density in East Cambridgeshire is high, with a greater density than that seen across Greater Cambridge as a whole and higher than seen nationally.
The construction sector accounts for the largest number of businesses in East Cambridgeshire and the district has more than twice the national proportion of businesses in agriculture, forestry and fishing.
Our dominant employment sectors are manufacturing, business administration and support services, education and retail. In addition, East Cambridgeshire has one of the highest proportions of warehouse and factory space of all Greater Cambridge districts with nearly 80% of all business floorspace allocated for this use. This is nearly 20% more than the proportion seen nationally.
A launch zone for entrepreneurship
East Cambridgeshire also boasts the highest proportions of “micro” (0-9 employee) businesses at 87% and 88% respectively. These proportions are significantly higher than the national proportion of 83%.
East Cambridgeshire has a superb selection of business and industrial parks, including the Lancaster Way Enterprise Zone offering office space for all sizes of business, from small start-ups to large operations. Ely Enterprise zone has outline consent to construct up to 125,000 square metres of additional office, industrial and distribution accommodation to suit occupiers' requirements.
