Apprenticeships // Become an apprentice

Am I eligible?

There are different entry requirements depending on the type of apprenticeship you apply for.  Let’s go through them one by one.

There are different entry requirements depending on the type of apprenticeship you apply for.  Let’s go through them one by one.

Intermediate Apprenticeships - Level 2 Programmes

This type of apprenticeship usually requires you to have up to 4 GCSEs (grade A* to C or 9 to 4 on the new grading system) or equivalent. This usually includes English and Maths, though some employers will provide a basic numeracy and literacy test during the application process instead.  For some intermediate apprenticeships, however, you might not need any formal qualifications - and don’t worry if you don’t quite meet the entry requirements, the National Apprenticeship Service runs an Access to Apprenticeship pathway.

Advanced Apprenticeships - Level 3 Programmes

Level 3 programmes generally require you to have either first completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship or have up to 5 GCSEs (grade A* to C or 9 to 5) or equivalent to be eligible to apply.  This generally must include English and Maths.

Higher Apprenticeships - Level 4 and above Programmes

Entry requirements will vary, but generally speaking if you have completed an Advanced Apprenticeship or have a minimum of two A-levels you will be eligible to apply for a Higher Apprenticeship.  If you don’t have those, employers might take into account previous work experience or other criteria instead.  The high entry requirements reflect the nature of the qualifications you’ll gain with this apprenticeship.
